Issue: Aging in-place
Practical Considerations
Senior Living Challenges and Choices – Part 2
Deciding to age in place either in a long-standing home or by moving to a smaller better suited residence, necessarily includes considerations of one’s day-to-day needs and lifestyle.
Is the residence located near a store within walking distance? How close are restaurants, stores and other businesses? Is the ability to drive required or are their alternative modes of transport like shuttles, buses or nearby neighbor available? What is the availability of family members or friends to assist you? Delivery businesses such as Door Dash, UberEATS, Instacart have made many of these challenges easier. Is Uber or Lyft a safe option in your town or city?
How will you get to doctor’s appointments? How far away is the nearest hospital or urgent care center? Accessibility to banks, hairdressers, pet care, and other personal services are also important considerations.
Who will care for your pet in the event you become ill or hospitalized? Do you have assistance in cleaning your home and laundry – including changing bed sheets? Who and how will home repairs and maintenance be provided?
What is the access to movies, plays, concerts, pickle ball courts, golf courses and other activities and events? How will you ensure you do not become isolated and lack social connection?
If you are providing care or support for an ill or impaired spouse, child or partner – who will take over in the event you become ill or need medical care? What type of support system can be put in place to provide regular intervals of time away and respite care?
These are a few of the issues to be considered when aging safely in your home. More articles will be added to this series so be sure to check back.
